The Freedom Pavilion, symbolizing peace, unity, and solidarity, stood at the Royal Łazienki Museum until the end of 2023. The installation was created by students from the Faculty of Architecture at the Warsaw University of Technology, expressing solidarity with Ukraine. The round shape of the pavilion symbolized unity and safety, while the sunflowers referenced the Ukrainian flag. The project, part of the "We Stand" program under the direction of Prof. Anna Maria Wierzbicka, was also an element of the international conference "Architecture of Challenges - Reconstruction of Ukraine."
project_
20 students worked in pairs to create conceptual design ideas. One project was selected, focusing on symbolic geometry and forms related to the theme of the pavilion. The pavilion design incorporates greenery, which is part of a universal, sacred language of design. The round geometry of the pavilion fits into a long tradition of design used in sacred architecture. It is a timeless, revered shape—common to various cultures—that communicates infinity, with no beginning or end. It is also a shape that embraces, expressing acceptance, hospitality, and solidarity.
building_
While designing the object, the students aimed to respect the growing old greenery and minimally interfere with nature. The temporary pavilion was designed with twelve identical spans. The outer perimeter of the multi-branched columns serves as support for a roof resembling the shape of a funnel. Thanks to the rings arranged around the perimeter, the whole structure functions like an inverted dome. The students not only designed the construction but also built it themselves, with the help of employees from the Warbud company.
action_
The pavilion was opened at the Royal Łazienki Museum by the renowned Japanese architect Shigeru Ban on July 1, 2023. The pavilion can currently be visited at its new location along the Vistula Boulevards on the Landing Pad.
